Atalanta was built in 1894 by Charles Bailey Jr and his brother Walter Bailey, She was sold to Wellington owners in 1895, where she set about gathering a consistent winning record into the 1970s. She was sold to Dunedin owners, where she continued to sail successfully. She is a true racing thoroughbred, with an enviably long history as a competitive racer. Atalanta was acquired by donation to the Wellington Classic Yacht Trust in 2013. Since then a twist in her hull has been straightened and refastened, and work done on her planking, rudder, and counter. The Wellington Classic Yacht Trust is seeking donations to replace her deck, so that she may be taken out again for regular summer sailing. If you wish to contribute in any way, please contact the Trust, details below. The Wellington Classic Yacht Trust is a registered charity, and any donations are tax deductable.
